Boston four-piece Shallow Pools are set to release their Headspace EP on Friday, June 4, 2021 via ESI Records. The record blends elements of nostalgic pop with bouncy hooks and introspective lyricism to cultivate a synth-driven, fuzzy dream pop sound.

Shallow Pools writes about finding the strength to leave a toxic relationship in the empowering song “nothing new,” but both “glow” and “it’s alright” bask in the joy and happiness found in healthy and loving relationships. The warm bass lines and poppy synth coupled with cute verses gives off such a sincere and inviting tone that it’s impossible not to lose yourself in the scenes they have created.
The incredibly relatable lyrics in “ice water” could probably describe how you’ve felt at least once over this last crazy year or so, but the infectious (🤭) bass line grooves and 80s-inspired synth hooks just make it all seem like it’s going to be okay. Dance that pain away!
The excellent closing track, “gardens” lyrically shows the growth of mindset throughout the album. The music also crescendos as the lyrics shift from “overgrown…wilted garden,” to understanding the importance of self-cultivation and love to “make room to grow again.” The goal is positive growth, not perfection, and Shallow Pools have struck the balance they need to continue to grow, despite these tough times.
