Jetty Bones, the Ohio-based project of Kelc Galluzzo along with the help of her friends, returns with a new EP entitled ‘-‘ (pronounced hyphen), due for release on February 22nd, 2019 via Take This to Heart Records.
Following up on 2016’s Crucial States and 2017’s Old Women, ‘-‘ is Jetty Bones’ most intricate, mature musical endeavor to date. Graceful melodies over six tracks enwrap very serious topics. “Better,” the record’s opener, is the victory anthem of a survivor while “Bringing It Up” focuses on the reclamation of one’s power. This is the overarching theme of the EP as a whole, with each track examining said theme from a different angle.
This is not a record about millennial angst or shallow, surface concerns but a cathartic journey on the road to wholeness. While the subject matter of these songs is heavier than one might initially expect, Jetty Bones is to be commended for the confidence in sharing them with the world, facing these dark places head-on and emerging triumphant. The result is a positive step forward en route to healing, not only for Galluzzo, but hopefully for many of her listeners as well. ‘-‘ is weighty, but one of the most beautiful releases of 2019 thus far.
