When dreams come true: Singing with Sleep On It

This past Tuesday I sang with one of my favorite bands, Sleep On It. Did I expect this to happen? Nope. Did I hope that I could share the stage with these awesome dudes someday? Of course! I was already going to their show (the bill was stacked: With Confidence, Broadside, Sleep On It and Small Talks) with friends, planning on dancing my way through the crowd during their set. When they invited me to sing and dance with them onstage via Twitter, I about fell off of my couch:

Before receiving this surprising tweet I had been posting covers of my favorite Sleep On It songs on Twitter, making them my own, and tagging the band in every post. I’ve been fortunate in that my covers have been noticed and shared by many of my favorite bands within the scene including State Champs, With Confidence, Emarosa, and All Time Low. Sleep On It is one of these bands that has consistently warmed my heart with their encouraging responses to my voice and musical arrangements. Jake Marquis, the lead guitarist of the band, even took the time to watch me perform at Vans Warped Tour in Atlanta! It is so rare to find bands that are talented in their own right and are also genuinely supportive of their fans’ dreams. There is a great deal of selfishness within this industry and we need more bands like Sleep On It to foster growth, confidence, and creativity throughout the entire scene.

So, this one awesome tweet meant a lot to me. The band reached out to me and gave me an opportunity to perform one of my favorite songs in front of a great crowd, and at my favorite venue (The Masquerade). I responded immediately and ran upstairs to my room with the help of my mom and friend to choose an outfit.

“I can’t believe this! What is going on?” I kept asking them in disbelief.

“Why are you so surprised?” my friend Andrew said, laughing.

“I’m so proud of you. You deserve this” my mom added, beaming.

So, we did the damn thing. Before going onstage to sing Derek DiScanio’s part of “Fireworks” each member smiled at me from the stage and checked in to see if I was ready. I wasn’t nervous at all, but smiled back and nodded quickly to show my enthusiasm. When I got onstage and took the microphone, everything felt right. The fringe on my jacket swayed as I moved my arms and grasped for every note. I decided to sing the part a little differently, putting my own spin on the melody as I did with my Twitter covers. The crowd was full of supportive faces and best friends who cheered me on until the end of the song. Zech, Jake, Teddy, AJ and Luka welcomed me with open arms, and thanked me for singing with them. They also told me that they checked out my music.

Unbelievable.

They thanked me for a moment that I would always remember as one of my favorite times onstage. I’m writing this article to thank them, once again, for believing in me and supporting my dreams. Being a young woman in the music scene has taken a lot of hard work and dedication, but this experience only motivates me to work harder.  I also want to thank everyone who has liked and shared my covers and listened to my own music this past year. 2019 is going to be a great year, and Sleep On It inspires me to not sleep on my dreams.
