Check out our interview with Colby Lykins from On Hi:
ST: How did On Hi start?
OH: It is an Indie/pop/hip hop project that comes as a direct result of playing in punk and hardcore bands for years and needing an outlet to put out what was really going on in my head musically.
ST: Who influenced/inspired your single “Therapy” and upcoming EP Toxins?
OH: ‘Toxins’ is a record that deals with my biggest weaknesses. Each song addresses a different issue. Therapy addresses my past issues within my relationships. Therapy has a lot of different layers to it but I believe that’s the main point that I’m putting out in the song. Some of the other songs on the record deal with heartbreak and losing friends and family to drugs.
ST: When and how did you first become interested in music? How long have you been playing music?
OH: My mom taught me a deep love for music. We sang together in church when I was young and I think that was what really got me into it. She then encouraged me to start writing songs when I was in 3rd grade and it hasn’t stopped since. I started playing guitar at 14 and that’s where my love for heavier stuff and punk music came into play. I was heavily involved in the music scene from the that point on.
ST: What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
OH: Find your own path and walk it. Create beautiful art with no limits. Be genuine to everyone you meet. Never stop working. Never settle. Never give up. Paint the future you want to see yourself in.
ST: You have to sing karaoke, what song do you pick?
OH: “No Scrubs” by TLC. Hands down. No questions asked.
ST: What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
OH: If I had to do something other than music I’d like to be an actor. It’s always been one of my passions but came second to music.
