Album Review: Prospective – ‘Unreal’

P 1

My favorite thing about metal is that it is so diverse.  Over the past few weeks I have had a great opportunity to get some early releases from some great emerging bands that have all been really heavy but with totally unique sounds.  From partycore to western progressive, it has been a cool few weeks here at Metal Thoughts.

This week I got an early listen to Unreal — the sophomore release from the Italian djent/progressive metal band, Prospective.  For those of you that aren’t familiar with djent, it is a progressive metal style that incorporates high-gain, distortion, pal-muting, and low pitch sounds.  The stlye was originated by heavy metal icons Meshuggah, though the name djent was not coined until a few years ago by progressive metal band (and one of my favorites!) Periphery.

About three tracks in to my first listen of Unreal, I knew Prospective was the real deal.  The album has it all — heavy distorted vocals perfectly complimented with scathing clean vocals, driving drum and bass rhythms that push through, and of course the distinctive djent stlye guitar riffs.  The first single released on the album “So Far Gone”, is a driving, heavy track with a catchy chorus line that is a perfect fit with the playlist of Sirius XM’s Octane.

The album as a whole is captivating, but a few tracks stick out to me.  The song “Only You” is incredibly emotional and keeps me locked in for the duration.  That song truly connects with me on a different level.  On the flip side “Back Home” is a truly heavy, in-your-face track with heavy riffs and vocals and the strongest instrumental breakdown on the album.

The guitar intro and build to the third track, “Frames”, is unique and mesmerizing.  However, my favorite track on the album may be “Elysium”.  “Elysium” is certainly the most engaging vocal performance on the album and also highlights some strong guitar riffs.  Most of all, the chorus line has been looping in my head since the first time I heard it!

Unreal dropped on Friday, March 9th and would be a great addition to your weekend playlist.  These guy are heavy and unique and have an awesome sound.  They are a band to watch for in 2018!
